Biography

Judy Garland was Born Francis Ethel Gumm on June 10 1922.

She was born in Grand Rapids Minnesota. Her parents were both from the theatre.

Young Judy was very spoiled, if she wanted anything and didn't get it, all she had to do was throw a fit and she'd get it.

As Judy grew older however, she began to mature and she began to realize that she was acting young and inmature when she started to throw a fit.

Judy did grow up to be one of the nicest, sweetest, most unselfish stars in hollywood.

Judy also was a born actress and singer. That was obvious from the start. She could make people cry, she could make people laugh, and she could convince them of most anything.

Judy made her stage debut when she was two and a half. She was singing "Jingle Bells" The crowd loved her! That marked the start of Judy's wonderful singing career.

No matter how good an actress she was, Judy was an even better singer. She didn't have a stunning voice, but she had the power to move people with her singing. She could sing song written for a grown woman to sing, and she could make people cry.

In the early 1930's the Gumm sisters were given the last name Garland. When Judy entered MGM Mayer told her she'd have to change her first name and asked her what she wanted it to be, Judy instantly said Judy. She wanted to name herself Judy after the popular song Judy. So from that day on, she became Judy Garland.

In 1935 when Judy was thirteen years old, She signed a contract with MGM. Although she had a contract signed, she didn't get a job in a film until one year later. Even then Judy didn't really become known until one year later. When Judy was fifteen, she sung the song "Dear. Mr Gable, You Made Me Love You," it was an instant hit.

Judy's first job in the movies, was in a movie called "Pigskin Parade" Judy hated the part, because she already considered herself ugly, and the part made her even uglier. She was to play a young homely backwoods girl with freckles and braids. That movie never was one of Judy's biggest hits.

When Judy was offered the role of Dorothy in "Wizzard Of Oz" she had no idea how that movie would boost her to stardom! She was glad to get a part that would all center around her, but she had no idea what the part would do for her.

Shirley Temple was really chosen to play the role of Dorothy, but when fox refused to loan her to MGM, Judy Garland got the biggest break of her career.

"The Wizzard Of Oz" was an instant hit all over. Judy went from unknown to famous! Her biggest hit song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," helped to boost her to stardom!

In October 1939, Judy put her handprints and footprints at  Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

Judy Garland went on to play in such movies as, "Meet Me In St. Louis," "In The Good Old Summertime," "Little Nellie Kelly," "The Harvey Girls," and lots more.

Judy Garland was married to five men, she first got married to David Rose in July 1941, but that marriage ended soon after in 1945. By 1942 the marriage was already on the rocks, Judy tried to keep it alive, but it didn't work out.

In June 1945 Judy married Vincente Minnelli (the director of "Meet Me In St. Louis") that marriage ended in 1951. It was said that Vincente was the only one of Judy's husbands who was able to keep her away from drugs.

In June 1952 Judy married Sidney Luft, that marriage ended in 1965.

In June 1965 Judy married Mark Herron, but that marriage ended in 1966.

Finally in March 1969 Judy Married Mickey Deans but that marriage (wich by april was already on the rocks) ended on June 22 1969 when Judy Garland after an overdose of drugs, died in the bathroom of her home in Chelsea, London.

Judy Garland will always be remebered in peoples memories as Dorothy in "Wizzard Of Oz" or as Esther in "Meet Me In St. Louis. Or as any one of her many famous roles.
